We are delighted to announce that the University of Exeter has been awarded a Block Grant Partnership which will provide our Departments with 47 awards over the five years.
This year we will be offering 9 Doctoral awards as follows:

  • 1 Doctoral Award in Archaeology
  • 2 Doctoral Award in Classics and Ancient History
  • 3 Doctoral Awards in History
  • 1 Doctoral Award in Middle Eastern and African Language and Culture
  • 1 Doctoral Award in Philosophy
  • 1 Doctoral Award in Religious Studies (Theology)

To be eligible for an AHRC postgraduate studentship a student must meet certain academic criteria and residency criteria.  The main criteria are:

  1. Awards are restricted to students meeting Home/EU residency criteria. UK nationals resident in the UK are normally eligible for a full award (EU nationals resident in the UK for the previous three years may also be eligible). EU nationals resident in the EEA (wider than EU) are usually eligible for a fees-only award. Overseas applicants are normally not eligible.
  2. Academic – For a Masters award, a 2:1 honours UG degree will be expected to be achieved. For PhD study, successful completion of a Masters is expected in addition. Candidates with overseas qualifications should check that their qualification meets the AHRC expected standard, listed on the AHRC website below
  3. Subject – your topic must be within the subject areas covered by the AHRC.  For more information on the AHRC subject definitions please click here.  Some postgraduate programmes may span across AHRC subject areas, in which case all subject areas should be listed on the form, to allow the application to be fully considered.

  1. You need to complete the Application Form for AHRC Funding: Doctoral Programmes and submit it to Elizabeth Hull at (huss-pgadmissions@exeter.ac.uk) by Friday 12th March 2010. By completing this form you will automatically be considered for the Humanities & Social Sciences 35 PhD Studentships & Bursaries, you do not need to complete the separate form for that competition.
  2. As for all of our awards, you must have also applied to the university via the normal university application form. Please make sure your application includes two academic references. You must have applied to the University and have submitted all your supporting documents by Friday 12th March 2010 to be eligible, so please submit your application form as soon as possible.  

Current PhD/MPhil students who wish to apply for an award starting in their second or third year should only complete the Application Form for AHRC Funding: Doctoral Programmes and submit it to Elizabeth Hull at (huss-pgadmissions@exeter.ac.uk) by Friday 12th March 2010.
