The JSPS Invitation Fellowship for Research in Japan


The JSPS Invitation Fellowship for Research in Japan (Long Term) is offered to promote international scientific cooperation and exchange. It allows researchers employed at designated Japanese research institutions to invite fellow researchers from other countries to Japan to participate in cooperative activities at their research institutions.

FIELDS OF RESEARCH

All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are included under this program.

ELIGIBILITY

The candidate must be a researcher with a research background equivalent to that of a professor, assistant professor or research associate in a Japanese university. As a rule, s/he should be employed full time in an overseas research
institution in a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner.) Other researchers may be eligible if they have held a doctorate degree for a period of more than six years prior to April 1, 2010. If the candidate is of Japanese nationality, s/he must have lived abroad and been activity engaged in research for a period of over 10 years.

NUMBER OF FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED

Approximately 70 fellowships will be granted.

TERMS OF AWARD

The terms of the Awards indicated below are subject to change.
For fellows:
1) A round-trip air ticket
2) A monthly maintenance allowance of Y369,000
3) Domestic research travel allowance of Y100,000
4) Research expenses of Y40,000
5) Overseas travel accident and sickness insurance coverage
For hosts:
Host’s cooperation allowance of Y50,000

September 4, 2009
Note: This deadline is for the head of the host institution to submit the application to JSPS; the time
frame for applicants (host researchers) to submit their applications is normally earlier.

Postdoctoral Training Fellowships for MB/PhD Graduates Postdoctoral Training Fellowships


This scheme provides a unique opportunity for the most promising newly qualified MB/PhD graduates to make an early start in developing their independent research careers. It will enable successful candidates to undertake a period of postdoctoral training in the best laboratories in the UK and overseas and can be tailored to allow them to continue their postgraduate clinical training.

VALUE OF FELLOWSHIP

Fellowships are for up to four years (see 'Eligibility') and, depending on the duration of the fellowship, would not be expected to exceed L350 000. Fellowships provide:

  • a salary set by the host institution, according to age and experience
  • research expenses (e.g. materials and consumables, animals, small items of equipment)
  • travel and overseas subsistence
  • support to attend scientific meetings.

No funding is provided for course fees or examination fees.

ELIGIBILITY

The award is open to individuals with a relevant connection to the European Economic Area (EEA) who have either graduated with an MB/PhD or who have achieved a high-quality PhD in a relevant subject, either during or prior to commencing their initial medical, veterinary or dental degree.

Preliminary application deadline: 24 April 2009
Full application deadline: 20 July 2009
Short-listed candidate interviews: December 2009
Schedule for full applications submitted for the 19 December 2008 deadline:

  • Outcome of short-listing exercise: mid-May 2009
  • Short-listed candidates interview: 17-18 June 2009

Subject to demand, the Trust anticipates that there will be subsequent calls for proposals.
